Taking the Leap

I have one hundred percent made up my mind, I am getting an insulin pump.

I never really thought I wouldn't, but was second guessing myself. Asking myself why? Well, the answer is complicated, but it comes down to this: I can manage my blood sugar leavels with insulin shots, but it takes 4+ shots a day and I honestly hate it. I hate being diabetic, I hate being over weight, I hate having "issues." On multiple days injections I do fine, for about 6 months. Then I start slacking and continue to slack for a couple of months and then get back to the program. And I love my family too much to do that. I need to be consistent and have a plan I can stick to, permentantly.

Advantages of a pump:
1 shot every three days, not 4 a day
no lantus (long acting insulin)
no leaving the table at dinner to go "shoot up"
no more bruising from injection sites
no more trying to give shots through clothes, or having to strip down to inject

Disadvantage of a pump:
I think it freaks Brent out
Having to think about it when getting dressed
Expense same monthly cost for insulin and supplies, but a lot up front

I meet with Kerri, my diabetes educator, tomorrow to keep things rolling.

  1. My mom is diabetic. She is still doing shots, but we keep trying to talk her into a pump. I'm interested to hear your views on the whole situation.
